What Is a Fresh 48 Session? (And Why I Think Every New Mama Deserves One)

There is a moment — somewhere in those first hours after your baby is born…that is unlike anything else in the world.

The room gets quiet. Baby is on your chest. You look down and you just...can't believe it. You can't believe they're real. You can't believe they're yours. You can't believe how much you already love them.

That moment passes so fast. And a Fresh 48 session exists for one reason: to make sure you never forget it.

What Is a Fresh 48 Session?

A Fresh 48 is a newborn photography session that takes place in the hospital, within the first 24 to 48 hours of your baby's life. It's documentary, quiet, and entirely unposed. I come to your room, I blend into the background, and I capture the realest, rawest, most sacred moments of your baby's very first day.

We're talking: the way your partner looked at you when the baby was placed on your chest. The tiny hospital bracelet. Baby's first yawn. Grandma meeting her new grandchild for the very first time. The details of that little bassinet card with your baby's name on it. The exhausted, glowing, completely overwhelmed look on your face that you will want to remember forever.

No props. No posing. No stress. Just your family and the most important day of your life.

What Does a Fresh 48 Session Look Like?

Once you're settled in your room and ready for me, I typically arrive within the first day or two. Sessions usually run about 60 to 90 minutes, long enough to capture everything beautifully, short enough that you still get to rest.

Here's what I focus on during a Fresh 48:

  • All of baby's tiny details — fingers, toes, ears, lips, that little nose

  • Mama holding, nursing, or just gazing at her baby

  • Dad's first moments — these are always my favorites to capture

  • Siblings or grandparents meeting baby for the first time

  • The details of the room — the bassinet card, the hat, the little things you'll want to remember

You don't need to prepare anything or dress up. A soft hospital gown, a cozy robe, even just your own PJs, it all photographs beautifully because it's real. And real is everything.

Should I Book a Fresh 48 & a Home Newborn Session?

Oh, I love this question. Yes. A thousand times yes if it's something that speaks to your heart.

Your Fresh 48 captures day one — the hospital room, the firsts, the rawness of becoming a mother. Your home newborn session (typically done in the first two weeks) gives us more time, more flexibility, and a whole different kind of intimacy in your own space. Together, they tell the complete story of those first magical days. They are different chapters of the same beautiful book.

When Should I Book?

Because Fresh 48 sessions require me to be ready to drop everything when you go into labor, I ask families to book these during pregnancy, ideally in the second trimester. I hold your spot and you just message me when the time comes. Easy as that.

If capturing those first hours of your baby's life feels important to you — it absolutely should — I would be so honored to be there. Reach out and let's talk Fresh 48. 🤍
